摘要:Grapefruit is a leading citrus fruit crop due to its rich nutraceutical profile. Most of the commercial grapefruit varieties are budsports and have low genetic variability highlighting the need to induce variability in existing germplasm. Pollination using irradiated pollen is an effective method to induce variability and alter fruit quality attributes. Seed parents of grapefruit varieties Shamber (SH), Star Ruby (SR) and Marsh Early (ME) were self and cross pollinated with gamma-irradiated pollen of SH, SR, ME and Red Blush (RB) from 0 to 700 Gy to study effect of pollen source and irradiation on fruit and seed development. ANOVA was used to determine the significance, and means were compared using Tukey's HSD test. Significant (P <= 0.05) genotypic response was observed for fruit physical and chemical traits in intervarietal crosses of grapefruit. Fruit setting, fruit weight and fruit size was maximum in SH x ME cross. Low irradiation levels also affected fruit size, however, ratio FL:FD was improved at higher irradiation levels, indicating the development of elongated fruit. Minimum developed seeds, maximum TSS (total soluble solids) and TSS:TA was noted in SR x SH and SR x RB. Total sugars and anthocyanins were higher in SR x ME and SR x RB. While ascorbic acid was increased in SH x RB and SR x RB. ME pollen enhanced fruit physical attributes of SH while RB pollen reduced number of seeds and improved fruit quality in SR. Pollination with irradiated pollen enhanced seed abortion resulting in higher number of shriveled seeds and ratio TSS:TA. Principal component analysis revealed variability in self-pollinated parental and intervarietal crosses and SH x ME200, ME x SH(35)0, ME x RB350 and SR x SR700 were found most divergent. Pollen parents, including ME enhanced fruit physical attributes in SH while RB pollen reduced seeds and improved fruit quality in SR. In conclusion, the use of suitable parents with irradiated pollen enhanced fruit size and improved fruit quality. Such studies may be useful to induce parthenogenesis and develop haploids for utilization in future breeding programs.
